Saint Vincent's School Relief Operation Drive Empty Saint Vincent's School Relief Operation Drive

Post by yang-ew Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:13 pm

OCTOBER 9, 2009.

As a result of the successive typhoons back home, a landslide buried seventeen houses in Kayan, Tadian. We just received a sad news that atleast 28 people were reported missing and several bodies were recovered after the side of a mountain collapsed, several injured and 5 confirmed dead. All roads leading to Mt. Province are closed so the province is practically isolated. With majority of donations pouring towards Manila for the victims of the recent floods. I suggest we can also help in our own little way.

The center of relief operation is at Holy Rosary Parish Church, Kayan, Tadian, where our very own Fr. Andrew Claver is the parish priest. Upon learning the news, Saint Vincent´s School spearheaded by Fr. John Habawel, parish priest of Sta. Rita Cathedral, Bontoc immediately announced in the morning mass for voluntary donations from the parishioners. In the classrooms, teachers passed the hat to the pupils/students for what ever amount collected for the typhoon victims in Tadian. All the different associations: Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Siciety, Catholic Womens League, Holy Name Society, Couples For Christ and others moved to take action for aide.
The Provincial Government, lead by Gov. Maximo Dalog requested the urgent purchase of generator to be used in Tadian, likewise the immediate opening and clearing of the road caused by the landslides.

As a Catholic community we like to help in any way we can. Let us help THE HOLY ROSARY PARISH MISSION, KAYAN, TADIAN by giving any donations we wish to extend.
FOR VOLUNTARY DONATIONS, PLEASE CONTACT FR. ANDREW CLAVER, Parish Priest of Holy Rosary, Kayan, Tadian.

THank you manang Luz for your very kind and urgent reply.

I had not been online during the past few days because of the bad signal we are encountering now as the effect of the typhoons. Our team volunteered to help in the relief operations just this sunday when we monitored the opening of the road going to Tadain. It was really heartbreaking and depressing to see displaced families and some casualties. My older brothers, inlaws and friends stationed our selves in Lubon and Kayan, Tadian where most of our kailians in Mountain Province are affected. Displaced families were evacuated to the school and others searched for their relatives to stay with. Around 5 people are is being searched up to this moment.

We joined the distribution of goods which were collected from Bontoc and from other places. Many individuals were evacuated to schools and church premises after their houses were washed out and nothing was left for them.It was really painful because of the trauma left and the pain to be carried throughout life by the lone survivor. Casualties are now spread in the different churches for vigil.

At the Holy Rosary Parish in Kayan, Tadian, Fr. Andrew Claver is mourning for the loss of his parishoners who were victims of the
typhoons. At least we were happy to see him tying to be strong and assisting the volunteers. The Bayanihan spirit lived on since relief
goods never stopped arriving. The Government and Private sectors had their own initiative in providing for the needs of the survivors. Food for the rescue and search & retrieval teams were provided. Relief Goods such as food, water, and clothes are good since these are sustenance to the daily human needs but we cannot provide for them forever.

We are praying that more voluntary donations will come in. What the people urgently need are supplies of food to eat on the next days to come. Sapay kuma ya fachangan tako nan parish station Fr. Andrew tay parishoners na mismo nan victims ay nay cha. Nan Ama tako ay intutungcho nan mangsubalit am-in isnan kinakhawis yu.

Likewise Webmaster IC. Sorry if I have not been posting any updates across the river. I was busy monitoring Tadian condition through our team who went to volunteer few days ago. Until now Mountain Province is still isolated and electric power has not been restored yet. Prices of goods went as high as you can imagine. The supply of NFA rice is not a scars in the province but the provincial goverment hope that it will be enough to supply everyone in the province until the road condition will be opened.

In Tadian. Few hours ago, report said that they are still searching for the last remaining body that has not been recovered yet. The municipal government of Tadian and the parish priest of Kayan, Tadian (Fr. Andrew Claver) can´t expressed the non-stop assistance of the rescuers and volunteers who have come to help during the past few days upto now. The overwhelming and down pouring bayanahan spirit was greatly shown by each one. Dake-dakel ay iyaman da!

Most of us are still in shock at the devastation in our homeland. But we cannot let our shock stop us from doing our part. We know that many of us are ready to donate but we are unsure
whom to approach. Those who wish to donate but prefer to direct their donations through Sta. Rita Cathedral church, please contact our Parish priest, Fr. John Habawel at +639209274298

Food donations are very much welcome, cash is still encouraged to fund long-term assistance to typhoon victims in the province. Others may want to donate for the assistance of college students whose families were victims of the typhoons. Donations may be deposited to the Holy Rosary Catholic Mission through Fr. Anrew Claver. PLEASE check his contact number from my previous posting. Way to go friends and schoolmates.....

Prayers and condolences to all the victims and envolved. May God give those rescuers,
volunteers all the power they need to go on with their job.

Same here, and same with everyone around. How I wish we could all help... but rest assured we are doing our best here also to help. All the BIBAK groups here are soliciting and raising funds through raffle draw. I know this will not be enough but at least we are doing also our part.

Good you were able to seek help from the Chatters´of Luzon 14. I´m really impressed how our team across the river dedicated everything to assist, volunteer and solicit ha??? Kasta kadi ta haan tayo lang nga nala-ing nga maki-chat, hehehe... Basta ag-alwad kayo lattan tani haan pay sinmingpa ti amin... Please get some rest too. By the way according to Tribo1234 another team from Bontoc will be going to Tadian this weekend to bring their ¨ug-ugfo¨ aid and goods that were solicited by the elders in Bontoc. Saint Vincent's School Relief Operation Drive Empty DISASTER REPORT FROM MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Post by dione selly chaokas Fri Oct 16, 2009 2:53 pm

PEPENG BATTERS MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Old folks say the destruction and
loss of lives brought about by typhoon Pepeng
that breezed through the province last October 3 to 10 is the most
devastating in recent years.

Reports consolidated by the
Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council puts the death toll at 42 with two
still missing and six others injured. At least 29 and 85 houses were totally
and partially damaged, respectively. Twenty other houses are considered
threatened.

Damage to crops and
infrastructures amounted to 284,752,288 pesos. This amount though is expected
to increase when reports from isolated areas are yet to arrive.

KAYAN
GRAVELY HIT

Gravely hit was barangay Kayan East in Tadian. A landslide
buried 35 people just when many households were having their diner. The killer
mudslide happened at 6:45 last October 8, 2009, two days before the community
was to celebrate their annual fiesta. All
of the remains were unearthed by volunteer rescuers with the help of tracker
dogs provided by the Philippine Army. The body of Victorino Albing, 87, was the last to be dug out from the wreckage
last October 14. The other victims were:
Syria Quinto, 39; Kahlil Quinto, 6; Kenny Quinto, 9; Frenchee Quinto, 5;
Lienden Rhee Quinto, 14; Irish Pacyado,
13; Chester Pacyado, 28 days; Cribel Pacyado, 22; Charlie Pacyado, 1 year 8
months old; Visitacion Trinidad, 50;
Reynaldo Trinidad, Sr., 65; Vanessa Trinidad, 8; Kate Gao-ay, 9; Wencer Gao-ay,
9; Lecio Mar Gao-ay, 33; Raymunda Gao-ay, 32; Marinet Bag-ay, 10; Raymart
Bag-ay, 1 year 4 months; Regal Bansil, 13; Felix Laging, 76; Lydia Daweg, 65;
Catalina Amoyen, 75; Albert Celino, 41;
Roseni Celino, 39; Renya Celino, 5;
Florence Bantasan, 66; Dora Bantasan, 62; Benjamin Bantasan, 70; Beverly Pacyado, 20; RJ Bansil, 6; Jason
Bacsa, 16; Eliza Celino, 65; Victor Balteng, 44; and Resly Bansil, 12. Injured
and rushed to the Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital in nearby Bauko are
Mercedes Gomez, Jokoy Trinidad, and Erlina Trinidad. Erlina was later airlifted
to Baguio City for further medical attention.

About 10 kilometers from Kayan
towards Cervantes is barangay Bunga where another erosion left three people dead, one injured, and three
houses totally damaged during the onslaught of
the same typhoon. Dead were Michael Galad, 35; Miko Galad, 7; and,
Michell Galad, 5. Nellie Galad was injured.

In barangay Betwagan, Sadanga, Caw-an Fakuyag, 70, was reported
dead while 12 houses were totally damaged due to another landslide.

Stela Angel and Nena Ancheta were
wounded when their houses in Maba-ay, Bauko were totally damaged by a
landslide.

FOUR
DROWNED

In Talubin, Bontoc, Julius Khita
was carried away by the swelling river current last October 8. Unfortunately, a
rescuer, Saldy Ngeteg, 19 got drowned while wading through the waters of the
Talubin river. Khita’s body was fished in barangay Anabel, Sadanga, last
October 13. Another tragedy befell the rescuers when one among the volunteers,
Oliver Rongan of Anabel Sadanga, searching for the body of Ngeteg was swiped
away by the strong undercurrent of the Chico River. Ngeteg and Rongan are yet to be found.

Residents
of Kawayan, Ilocos Sur retrieved the body of June Beldio of Mabalite, Tadian
who was reportedly carried by the
bulging waters of the Mabalite river caused by the continuous rains.

PROVINCE
ISOLATED

Rampaging waters along mountain
slopes instigated landslides in various areas of the road network practically
isolating the province hindering the entry of supplies and the transport of
injured people needing special medical attention to hospitals outside the
province. As of press time, the only route towards the other provinces is
through the Bontoc-Ifugao road even as the district office of the Department of
Public Works and Highways reported that the national towards Benguet is open up
to kilometer 36 in the town of Tublay while the Mountain Province section of
the Bontoc-Kalinga road has been cleared. The Tadian-Cervantes road is not yet
opened while equipments are working overtime to clear the Barlig-Natonin road.

Aggravating the problem is the
damage of electric power stations which held the province in darkness since
October 7. The absence of electric current disrupted office works and affected
communication facilities slowing down the exchange of information. The operation
center of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council has to be relocated to
the conference hall of the Bontoc General Hospital where lighting is supplied
by a gasoline-run generator.

PROTEST
AGAINST ERRING TRAFFIC OFFICERS

Visibly irked by reports about
some traffic officers stationed along the Maharlika Highway in Region 2
apprehending drivers and impounding vehicles for unreasonable violations,
governor Maximo Dalog threatened to take the complaints to court should anybody
be caught.

The Maharlika Highway is the
route taken by vehicles to and from the province to deliver relief goods and
supplies to the affected areas. “It is a time for all to show their sympathy to
our brothers and sisters who suffered the wrath of the typhoon so they should not
do that. On the contrary, they should be more considerate and more humane in
treating passersby more so that most of the travelers are relatives of dead
victims,” Dalog reacted.

Made known of the complaints, LTO
Chief Arturo Lumibao suspended the deputization of LTO personnel to enforce
traffic laws and disallowed the putting up of roadside checkpoints along the
question area until further orders.

In the 1990’s, Dalog caused the
filing of charges against elements of the Traffic Command posted along the same
road stretch for the inconveniences they caused among motorists. But for
humanitarian reasons, he allowed it to be solved through the indigenous way.

SHOW
OF CONCERN

Calamities could indeed draw out
the best from mankind. Hours after the Kayan tragedy was made known, residents
from the different parts of the province started pooling whatever they could
financially and materially afford to help the victims even as people from
nearby areas rushed in to join the retrieval operations.

On the night the mudslide
occurred, PDCC chairman Maximo Dalog immediately convened the Provincial
Disaster Coordinating Council at the Mansion House which charted emergency
plans. The initial step though came to naught when a landslide hampered the
travel of medical personnel and a group of trained rescuers from police and
army stationed in the province.

The PDCC approved the release of
funds to cover immediate rescue expenses and financial assistance to the
victims.

In a meeting with the Regional
Disaster Coordinating Council in Baguio City, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
announced the release of funds to cover burial expenses of those who perished.

Upon request, the Northern
Builders, RUA Construction and OCDC made available some equipment to compliment
those from the provincial government and DPWH to hasten the rescue operations
in Kayan.

Donations from the office of
Congressman Manuel Agyao and other local governments such as Kalinga and Ifugao
started to pour in.

APPEAL
FOR HELP

The spirit of oneness demonstrated
by countless individuals, government bodies, and officials have ably solved the
immediate needs of victims. Through their voluntary donations, a decent burial
of all who died and the hospitalization of those injured are ensured.

Meanwhile, families affected are
temporarily sheltered in schools and public buildings while mourning the loss
of their loved ones. With all their
material possessions gone, rising from the ruins would be too much if not
impossible for them to bear. But with our kind hearts, we could help them
rebuild their homes and start life anew.

Donations could be sent to the
Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council office at the provincial capitol in
Bontoc, Mountain Province. For more information, you can contact the Provincial
Disaster Coordinating Council through phone number 074-462-4310 and or through
CP numbers 09209167344, 09186773617 and 09189198229. / Angel Baybay

Halo ken chatako am-in!!! Our electric power has just been restored yesterday morning in Bontoc. We were all shocked in the office when Tribo1234 shared us the photo and video clips uploaded at Interactive Cordillera. Up to present solicitations continue to pass from house to house, office to office and every individual tries to give any amount to help. Let´s keep it this way.

Thanks for the update Stela! That would mean probably that some donations may have been directed to their family representative back home and gave it to the most affected area like East Kayan, Tadian.

For our BIBAK group here, we just had our meeting yesterday to discuss on this matter. Half of our members have given their share and we have to wait for the others before we will send our donation ta mamamingsan.

Keep us posted. Thanks!

Roger copy, loud and clear! We know how the bontoc community help in searching the unretrieved body up to now. Hope the ongoing storm signal will pass away the soonest so the people will not be hard up searching for Zaldy.
